It was great to be asked by one of our long-standing clients Stelrad, the UK’s number one radiator specialist, to provide a floor solution for their new storage area.
Stelrad, with facilities in the UK and Europe, prides itself on offering innovative, quality radiator products to its discerning customers. They have been manufacturing high quality steel radiators since 1936.
CG Flooring Systems were asked to transform a floor in the UK site, based in Mexborough, South Yorkshire, into something special.
A new storage area, situated within an extension built off the main warehouse, used an existing external brushed finished slab. CG Flooring’s brief was to “make the floor feel more like a warehouse floor”.
After a period of consultation discussing several different solutions, a decision was reached for our team to produce a smooth, low gloss finished floor surface. A grind and polish solution was offered as the way forward using CoGri’s Industrial System to deliver the desired finish.
The CoGri Industrial Grind and Polish provides a hard-wearing surface that is easy to maintain with low life cycle costs. Not to mention it’s easy on the eye!
The first step was to carry out some joint and surface repairs on identified problem areas. Repairs are essential to enhance the finished appearance. They are also a technical requirement to ensure a smooth transition over the floor by materials handling equipment as well as the operators who use the floor.
Repairs were carried out using our tried and tested joint arris and re-seal details, applying CoGri Rapid Mender and CoGri Rapid Seal products, respectively. Enabling effective repairs with a minimum impact on programme.
Once the repairs were completed, the grinding started, with an initial challenge to grind out the textured surface of the brushed finish. Spending a little time in the early stages testing which grade of tooling worked best, the technicians could then optimise productivity to smooth out the surface.
With the ‘hard yards’ done; the floor was treated with an application of CoGri Densifier. This helps to improve the durability of the floor when used as part of the grind and polish process. The final polishing steps were carried out to give the floor a low gloss finish.
Paul Schofield is the Warehouse and Distribution Manager at Stelrad and is also responsible for the safety, endurance, and appearance of the warehouse floor on-site at the 17-acre production and distribution operation. He says,
“We have always been impressed with the work CG Flooring delivers, so when we decided to upgrade the floor in our new storage area, they were the first people we thought of. Our new floor provides everything we asked for. The floor looks like it belongs inside a warehouse, with the rough, brushed surface eradicated and a smooth, low-shine one now in operation. I can’t believe the transformation. It looks like a new floor has been laid!”

Polished concrete is a great way to upcycle an existing floor slab, helping reduce the need for additional materials to be applied to the floor. This also leads to a reduction in the amount of packaging and transport needed to deliver a polished concrete finish. Which can only be a positive in the modern world.
For many floors in industrial settings, polishing concrete can be an ideal solution. It improves the aesthetic and meets the brief, especially in this case, making the finished floor “feel like a true warehouse floor.”
